Polar Analytics alternatives: a fair guide for Shopify brands

Maybe your Polar Analytics renewal is coming up and the quote went up with your revenue. Maybe you signed up for flexible reporting and found your team mostly checks one screen. Or maybe you're about to choose a Shopify analytics tool and Polar is one of several names on the list. Either way, you're looking at Polar Analytics alternatives.

The right alternative depends on why you're looking. Polar is strong at one kind of job, and its competitors are each built around a different one. This guide covers what Polar does, the common reasons brands look elsewhere, the main alternatives and what each is built for, and a short checklist to narrow it down.

One disclosure up front: we make Soran, which is one of the alternatives. We've kept the comparisons to what each company says publicly about its own product, and we don't quote prices, because they change and depend on your store's size. Check each vendor's site for current details.

What Polar Analytics is

Polar Analytics is an analytics platform for ecommerce brands, especially on Shopify. At its heart it's a business intelligence (BI) tool: a tool for pulling data from many sources into one place and building your own reports and metrics on top of it.

From Polar's own pages:

  • Connectors that pull data from your store, ad platforms, email tools and other apps into one place.
  • [A dedicated data warehouse](https://www.polaranalytics.com/data-warehouse) for each customer. A data warehouse is a central database built for reporting. Polar says each customer gets their own Snowflake database, with SQL access for teams that want to query it directly.
  • A large library of ready-made ecommerce metrics, plus custom metrics and dimensions, so a term like "profit" can be defined once and used everywhere.
  • Ask Polar, an AI assistant for asking questions about your data in plain English.
  • A first-party pixel for attribution, which Polar says is built on Shopify's Web Pixel API, with several attribution models to choose from.
  • Causal Lift, its incrementality testing product. Incrementality testing measures how many sales an ad actually caused by comparing regions or groups that saw it with ones that didn't.
  • Klaviyo audience tools that aim to recover visitors your email platform would otherwise miss.

It's a broad, flexible product, and many brands are happy with it. People usually look at alternatives because of fit, not flaws.

Why brands look for a Polar Analytics alternative

These are the reasons we hear most. Not all will apply to you.

  • They use a fraction of it. A flexible BI tool shines when someone on the team builds and maintains reports. If nobody does, you end up paying for flexibility you don't use.
  • They want a clear answer to one question. "Which ads made money this week?" is a different job from "build me any report." Some teams want a tool that answers the first one out of the box.
  • The numbers need to reconcile. Some brands want to see exactly how each order's credit was split across channels, and check that channel totals match what the store took.
  • Cost as they grow. Polar's Shopify app listing prices by your store's sales volume, which is common in this category. Some brands prefer a flatter price.
  • They want a different focus. Deep modeled attribution, lifetime value, or fixing the tracking data itself are each their own specialty.

What to compare in any Polar alternative

Nearly every tool here has a dashboard. The differences that matter are underneath.

How they track orders

Tracking that runs only in the shopper's browser loses data to ad blockers, browser privacy features and closed tabs. Server-side tracking records events from a server, which the shopper's browser settings can't block, so fewer orders go missing. Server-side tracking for Shopify explains the difference.

How they split credit

An attribution model is the rule for deciding which ads get credit for a sale. What matters most is that each order's credit is handed out once, so channel totals add up to your real revenue, and that you can see why an order got the credit it did. Marketing attribution models compares the common ones.

Whether spend is matched to the exact ad

Some tools match ad spend at the campaign level. Others tie it to the individual ad behind each order. Ad-level matching is what lets you pause the one ad that isn't working instead of the whole campaign.

Whether they send conversions back to ad platforms

Meta, TikTok and other platforms learn who to show ads to from the conversions they receive. Some tools send purchases back through services like the Meta Conversions API , so the platforms optimize on more complete data.

Profit depth

Does the tool stop at revenue, or does it take off discounts, refunds, product costs, shipping and fees to show what you actually kept?

How much building it needs

A BI tool can answer almost anything, once someone builds the report. A focused tool answers fewer questions, but answers them on day one. Be honest about how much time your team has.

The main Polar Analytics alternatives

These are high-level summaries based on each company's own descriptions. Treat them as a starting point for your own demos.

Triple Whale

Triple Whale is an analytics platform built primarily for Shopify brands. It has its own first-party pixel, Triple Pixel, that combines browser and server-side tracking, several attribution models, a measurement layer called Compass that brings together attribution, marketing mix modeling and incrementality testing, and an AI layer, Moby, that does analysis and also creative and campaign work.

Tends to suit: Shopify brands that want an all-in-one platform with ready-made dashboards rather than a reporting toolkit.

Northbeam

Northbeam focuses on measurement for direct-to-consumer brands with larger ad budgets. It offers several attribution models, including ones that credit ad views as well as clicks, and sells a marketing mix modeling product. Marketing mix modeling (MMM) estimates each channel's effect from patterns in total spend and sales over time.

Tends to suit: brands spending across many channels that want modeled measurement and have someone to dig into it.

Lifetimely

Lifetimely , now part of AMP, is built around profit and customer lifetime value for Shopify stores. Customer lifetime value (LTV) is the total a customer spends with you over their whole relationship with your brand.

Tends to suit: brands whose main question is "what is a customer worth, and what did we keep?" rather than "which ad worked?"

Elevar

Elevar , now part of Audiense, is a tracking tool more than an analytics dashboard. It focuses on getting accurate data from your Shopify store into ad platforms and analytics tools, including server-side.

Tends to suit: brands that already have reporting they like and want to fix the data going into it.

Your own warehouse and BI tool

If the warehouse and custom metrics are what you value most in Polar, the other path is building it yourself: a data pipeline into your own warehouse, plus a reporting tool like Looker Studio or similar. You get full control and pay in setup and upkeep time.

Tends to suit: brands with an in-house data person and specific reporting needs no off-the-shelf tool covers.

Soran

Soran is attribution and profit analytics for Shopify brands and the agencies that run them. It tracks orders on the server, works out which ads earned each sale with each order counted once, shows what you kept after costs, and sends conversions back to ad platforms. More in its own section below.

Tends to suit: Shopify brands that want channel totals matching the store, profit by campaign and product, and a flat price, without building reports.

Polar Analytics vs Triple Whale

These two get compared most, so here's the short version.

Both connect your Shopify store and ad platforms, both have their own pixel and several attribution models, both offer an AI assistant, and both sell incrementality testing. The difference is the center of gravity.

  • Polar leans toward flexible reporting. Its own pitch puts the warehouse, the metric library and custom metrics up front. It suits a team that wants to define its own numbers and build its own views.
  • Triple Whale leans toward an all-in-one daily screen. Its pitch puts ready-made dashboards, attribution and an AI that also does operational work up front. It suits a team that wants a lot done for it inside one product.

If you mostly want to build reports, Polar is the closer fit. If you mostly want answers handed to you each morning, Triple Whale is. If what you actually want is a narrow, checkable answer to "which ads made money," a focused attribution tool may beat both.

How to choose: five questions

  1. Who will use it, and how? If someone will build reports, a BI tool earns its keep. If people will only glance at a dashboard, choose something that answers your question out of the box.
  2. What's the one question you want answered every morning? "Which ads earned money" points to attribution tools. "What did we keep" points to profit tools. "Is my tracking right" points to tracking tools. "I need every metric my way" points to BI.
  3. Which platforms do you need on day one? List your store platform and every ad platform you spend on. Rule out any tool that doesn't support them today.
  4. How does the price change as you grow? Ask each vendor what happens to the bill if your revenue doubles.
  5. Can you check the numbers? On a trial, compare the tool's total revenue for a week with your store's. If they're far apart, ask why.

Mistakes to avoid when switching

  • Expecting past attribution on day one. Order history can usually be imported, but the visit paths behind past orders only exist from the day new tracking is installed. Run the new tool alongside the old one for a few weeks.
  • Forgetting your custom metrics. If your team defined metrics in Polar, write the definitions down before you leave, so you can rebuild them or check the new tool's versions match.
  • Losing your warehouse data. If you rely on Polar's Snowflake database, plan an export before the contract ends.
  • Sending conversions twice. If your old tool sent purchases to Meta and the new one does too, make sure only one does, or that duplicates are removed. Conversions API vs Meta pixel explains how duplicate events are matched.
  • Choosing on the demo dashboard. Every demo looks good with sample data. Ask to see your own store during the trial.

How Soran handles it

If you're comparing Soran with Polar, here's what it does, at the level you'd see it as a customer:

  • Totals that match your store. Each order's credit is split once across the visits that led to it, so channel totals add up to what the store took. You can switch attribution models and every number updates.
  • Spend matched to the exact ad. Meta and TikTok spend is tied to the specific ad behind each order.
  • Honest ROAS. A channel with revenue but no spend is flagged as a probable unconnected ad account, not shown as a flattering number.
  • Server-side tracking so ad blockers and closed tabs don't lose purchases.
  • Profit down to contribution margin, after discounts, refunds, product costs, shipping and fees, per campaign and per product.
  • Conversions sent back to ad platforms such as Meta and TikTok, with duplicates removed.
  • Soran AI answers plain-English questions from your store's data and names the report it used.
  • One flat price per store, with no event, seat or volume limits.

To be fair about the gaps: Soran isn't a BI tool, so there's no custom metric builder or dedicated warehouse. Shopify is the only store platform today, Google Ads isn't connected yet, and there's no marketing mix modeling, incrementality testing or lifetime value cohort report. If those are must-haves, Polar or another tool on this list may fit better.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Polar Analytics alternative for Shopify?

It depends on what you need. For attribution that matches your store plus profit by campaign, Soran is built for that (we make it, so test it against the others). For an all-in-one platform, Triple Whale. For modeled attribution at larger budgets, Northbeam. For profit and lifetime value, Lifetimely. For fixing tracking data, Elevar.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Polar Analytics?

Prices change and depend on your store's size, so compare current quotes directly. Polar's Shopify listing prices by sales volume. Ask every vendor how the price changes as you grow, since that's where costs often differ most.

Is Polar Analytics better than Triple Whale?

Neither is better across the board. Polar leans toward flexible reporting and custom metrics. Triple Whale leans toward an all-in-one daily platform. Pick the one shaped like how your team actually works.

Can I keep my data if I leave Polar?

Your orders stay in Shopify, and most tools can import them. Export any warehouse data and write down your custom metric definitions before your contract ends. Visit-level attribution history doesn't carry over to a new tool.

Do I need a BI tool or an attribution tool?

If your main question is which ads and channels made money, an attribution tool answers that directly. If you need many custom reports across many data sources and have someone to build them, a BI tool fits better. Many brands start with attribution and add BI later. What is marketing attribution covers the basics.
