# Expenses and profit

> Add costs so reports show profit, not just revenue.

Revenue arrives with your orders. Profit does not — Soran has to be told what
things cost. **Data management → Expenses** is where that goes.

Expenses live under Data management rather than Settings for the same reason
goals do: this is a price list you maintain as suppliers change their prices, not
a preference you set once.

## The four kinds of cost

> **[Product costs](/docs/data/cogs)**
>
> What each product cost you to buy.

> **[Shipping](/docs/data/shipping)**
>
> What fulfilment costs, per order.

> **[Transaction fees](/docs/data/transaction-fees)**
>
> What your payment processor takes.

> **[Product catalog](/docs/data/product-catalog)**
>
> The products these costs attach to.

Each is a separate list with its own screen, so a rule is linkable and a new kind
of cost is a new surface rather than a new tab.

## Where to start

Product costs first. They are the largest of the lists and the one that decides
whether gross profit can be stated at all — without them there is no margin to
report, whatever else you enter.

Shipping and transaction fees are quick by comparison: most stores need one
fallback rule for each.
